The Cool Up programme took part in the “Montreal Protocol advancing climate action” pavilion in the Blue Zone at COP28 UAE in Dubai. Collaborating with Ozone Secretariat and other partners in the cooling sector will allow us the opportunity to further bridge the worlds between ozone and climate.

Future-proofing industry: Pioneering the sustainable cooling transition
December 1, Montreal Protocol Pavilion
This engaging panel discussion on the future of the industry brought together experts to explore innovations in sustainable cooling & natural refrigerants, and how training and capacity building initiatives can lead to a transformational impact. We addressed crucial questions such as: “What strategies can we implement to shape the future of the cooling industry?” and “How can engaging youth in training and capacity building programmes contribute to lasting, transformational change?”

A cool future for Jordan: Upscaling national policies to reach climate target December 2, Montreal Protocol Pavilion This panel discussion dove deep into Jordan’s commitment to modernization and its holistic approach to climate and sustainability action, with a focus on sustainable cooling initiatives and the demand for clean energy. During this discussion, we explored how a variety for actors in Jordan are playing their part, and how sustainable cooling supports the country’s future vision. Clean cooling supporting health and the environment
December 3, Montreal Protocol Pavilion
This event focused on the critical intersection of health and cooling. We addressed the problem of how access to cooling is vital for health and well-being, especially in hot climates, and how traditional cooling systems can contribute to environmental issues. We also explored how sustainable cooling, including the use of natural refrigerants, can offer solutions to these challenges and create a healthier and more environmentally friendly future.

Cool solutions for the MENA Region: National Cooling Action Plans

In this event, we provided insights into the key messages and lessons learned from developing National Cooling Action Plans (NCAPs) supported by UNDP and Cool Up. We offered an overview of NCAP preparation, including on the topic of financing, in MENA region countries and take a closer look at the progress in Türkiye. Lastly, we set aside time for National Ozone Units (NOUs) to share their valuable perspectives.

Enabling the transition to efficient, climate-friendly cooling in the MENA region

With the anticipated upsurge in cooling demand due to factors such as heightened temperatures, population growth, and urbanization, the MENA region stands at the cusp of a critical juncture. This event focused on the shift towards efficient, climate-friendly cooling systems that offer not only a response to the increasing thermal stress but also open a realm of investment opportunities that can leverage significant cost savings. Governmental stakeholders, developed markets, multilateral funds, and the private sector were identified as pivotal contributors in bridging the investment gap to help emerging markets achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

Towards a market transformation in cooling: At the intersection of regulation and financing

Cool Up and United for Efficiency (U4E) explored the intersection of regulation and financing with experts touching on topics such as existing regulatory and financing mechanisms for sustainable cooling, implementation of model regulations for sustainable cooling, how regulation paves the way for financing the sustainable cooling transition, and more in this event.

Launch of “MENA Region Cooling Status Report”. Evening reception.
December 4, RCREEE Pavilion
On 4 December the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) hosted in close collaboration with Cool Up an evening reception at the RCREEE pavilion during COP28 in Dubai (UAE). The networking event provided a platform to engage among COP28 participants and enable discussions as well as new opportunities to collaborate on multi-sectoral level. Highlight of the eventing reception was the keynote opening by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German government to launch Cool Up’s new publication the “MENA Region Cooling Status Report”.

Cooling our climate with the Montreal Protocol

This event, organised by Guidehouse, revolved around a collaboration of all Montreal Protocol Pavilion partners, and bridged the climate (COP) and ozone (MOP) worlds through sustainable cooling, integrating natural refrigerants, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.

Accelerating technological change for future-proof cooling by strengthening regional capacities
December 8, RCREEE Pavilion
Sharing knowledge across stakeholders is crucial for the future of sustainable cooling. Skilled workforces will be needed to drive the upscaling of sustainable cooling practices. Learning new skills in shared, regional experiences helps to foster innovation in design and technologies, contributes to the widespread understanding of the economic benefits of sustainable cooling, and supports effective implementation of policies and regulations that contribute to national and international climate targets. This event showcased Cool Up’s theoretical and practical skills training brings together stakeholders in industry, policy, and finance from across our partner countries.

This event officially launched the second edition of Cool Up’s MENA Region Cooling Status Report. This event provided a sneak peek into the report which is centered around the question “Where are MENA and Türkiye in the transition to sustainable cooling?” We heard from report contributors as to why the MENA region is gaining increasing importance in international climate action, and how sustainable cooling can play a significant role in achieving international climate goals.
