  • The requested energy-efficient equipment using natural refrigerants has to be commercially available technology in the market.
  • Applicants must be legally registered private sector companies and public sector authorities (hospitals, universities, public buildings, etc.) in Türkiye open to new technologies and keen to implement energy-efficient systems using natural refrigerants.
  • Commercial facilities including hotels, malls, supermarkets, etc. located across Türkiye are eligible to apply.

Eligible cooling technologies:

Technologies that use natural refrigerants or no refrigerants for air conditioning, district cooling and commercial refrigeration.

Demonstration projects benefits

The demonstration projects will serve as role models for an accelerated and broad uptake of sustainable cooling in the MENA region and Türkiye. Successful applicants will be eligible to receive a range of support from Cool Up project.

Technical assistance
  • Support for technology selection cost-benefit
  • Support for technology procurement and commissioning
  • Monitoring and support for system optimization
  • Support for servicing and maintenance
Financing the project
  • Financial support for transitioning to a more sustainable solution, depending on the eligibility of the project idea (e.g. financial support for the purchase of equipment)
  • Capacity building support for accessing project funding, such as loans or third-party funding
Visibility and outreach
  • Promotion on the Cool Up website, social media, and other channels and high visibility as front runner and role model for sustainable cooling in the country and beyond

Project evaluation and criteria

The selection will be done considering the aim of Cool Up programme in showcasing environmental, technical, financial advantages of sustainable cooling technologies. The selection will be guided by, but not limited to, the following criteria:

  • Energy saving potential
  • High impact (scalability and commercial viability on the long-term and GHG emissions savings)
  • Replicability
  • Domestically produced and/or distributed technologies is an advantage
  • Preference of new in-kind technology to the specific country (no support for early-stage R&D technologies)
  • Compatibility with a fully renewable energy supply
  • Availability of spare parts and after sales service in Türkiye (if not already available, it needs to be created with the project setup)

The selection of projects consists of two phases:

  1. Interested parties will submit an idea. Cool Up will review all applications and make a shortlist pre-selection from the submissions that meet the minimum requirements, and that represent the most promising project ideas.
  2. Shortlisted projects will be notified and asked to provide additional information to assist Cool Up in selecting its final demonstration projects.

*All Cool Up supported demo projects will be monitored for energy and cooling performance. Applicants will be requested to cooperate with the Cool Up team for the monitoring system installations to monitor the performance of the newly installed equipment using natural refrigerants. In addition, energy consumption of the new equipment will be compared with a typical new conventional alternative equipment (as reference for conventional f-gas refrigerants, and its standard efficiency). The respective costs of monitoring equipment and activities are fully covered by Cool Up.

Precondition: Refrigeration with natural refrigerants or not in kind cooling technologies.

Cool Up intends to publish reports on the demo projects, which will include i.a. a comparison to the baseline regarding energy performance as well investment- and operational-costs.
